Hannah Keefer of Pinewood Preparatory School Receives the Young Women in Public Affairs Scholarship

Hannah Keefer of Pinewood Preparatory School in Summerville, SC, was selected to receive the Young Women in Public Affairs Scholarship from the Zonta Club of Charleston. Hannah’s achievements to date are impressive. She has performed over 450 hours of community service, many hours devoted to tutoring K-5 students and 6th graders as well as to Savannah’s Purse and the Senior Citizen Prom program. She met stringent standards for admission to Pinewood’s Beta club and she is currently the president of the International Club. She competes on Pinewood’s premier, award-winning Model United Nations delegation. During the summer of 2008, she participated in Yale University’s Junior Statesman Summer School. Her unwavering pursuit of excellence and her community involvement are the reasons for selecting Hannah as the Zonta Club of Charleston’s 2010 Young Women in Public Affairs Scholar.

Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship

SCHOLARSHIP DESCRIPTION
Established in 1998 from a generous bequest by Jane M. Klausman, a member of the Zonta Club of Syracuse, New York USA, and the 1990-1995 Zonta International Parliamentarian, the Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship is awarded annually to women pursuing undergraduate or Master’s degrees in business management.

The program operates at the Zonta club, district and international levels. Zonta clubs provide awards for club recipients. Zonta International awards scholarships of US$1,000 each at the district level and twelve international scholarships in the amount of US$5,000 each. The Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarships are awarded annually and may be used for tuition, books or living expenses at any university, college or institution offering accredited business courses and degrees.

ELIGIBILITY
Women pursuing a business or business-related degree who demonstrate outstanding potential in the field are eligible.  Online students are also eligible.  Members and employees of Zonta International or the Zonta International Foundation are not eligible to apply for the Scholarships.

APPLICATION PROCESS
The Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship program operates at the club, district and international levels of Zonta International. Applicants must be nominated by a local Zonta club. The Zonta Club of Charleston offers a $500 scholarship. Applications selected by Zonta clubs are sent to their respective Zonta governors. A district evaluating committee selects one applicant per district to submit to Zonta International Headquarters.  The Zonta International Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship Committee selects twelve international recipients from the district applicants.  Applications for the 2011 Jane M. DEADLINE
Applications must be completed and presented to the Zonta Club of Charleston by May 31 2011. A club recipient is selected by June 30 2011, and the application is presented to the governor by 1 July 2011. The district recipient is selected, and the application is presented to Zonta International Headquarters by 1 September 2011. International recipients will be contacted by their Zonta club leader by mid October 2011.

1st Annual Breaking the Silence Awards Gala Taking Place on January 22, 2011

The Zonta Club of Charleston will honor and recognize, for the first event ever, individuals and organizations making a difference in lives of domestic violence victims. The First Annual Breaking the Silence Awards Gala will take place on January 22, 2011, starting at 6pm at the Harbour Club located in downtown Charleston. The key note speaker is Solicitor Scarlett Wilson.

The event, hosted by the Zonta Club of Charleston, is benefiting Liza’s Lifeline of South Carolina that raises funds to assist domestic violence victims, and Zonta’s service projects.  Winners of the First Annual Breaking the Silence Awards will be announced in the following categories: Best in Media, Best in Business, Best Volunteer and Best Professional. Liza’s Lifeline Person of the Year for lifelong achievement will be selected by the board of Liza’s Lifeline of South Carolina.

“In 2006, South Carolina ranked number one nationally in the number of women killed by male intimate partners. Domestic violence has become a crisis in South Carolina. The office of Attorney General has named it the number one crime problem in our state. Zonta set out to create an annual award program that each year will recognize those who are putting their lives on the line and are truly devoted to making a difference in lives of domestic violence victims,” says Vladia Jurcova-Spencer, president of the Zonta Club of Charleston.

“For some this involvement means risking their lives by answering domestic disturbance calls, others fight their battle in the court rooms. For most parts, these individuals are not recognized for their tireless work and we want to rectify that,” Jurcova-Spencer continues. “We also encourage business and organizations to step up and compete for honors.”

Winners will be announced at the First Annual Breaking the Silence Gala and Awards on January 22, 2011 at the Harbour Club located in downtown Charleston.

The event is hosted by the Zonta Club of Charleston and Liza’s Lifeline. Nominations for our First Annual Breaking the Silence Awards are accepted in the following categories: Best in Media, Best in Business, Best Volunteer and Best Professional. Liza’s Lifeline Person of the Year for lifelong achievement will be selected by the board of Liza’s Lifeline and announced at the event. Zonta’s mission is to stop violence, and to improve lives of women through a variety of international service projects. In 2008-2010, Zonta International will fund service programs in Rwanda (Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV), in Guatemala and El Salvador (Safe Cities for Women), in Liberia (Reduction of Obstetric Fistula). The local chapter is devoted to prevention of domestic violence in the Greater Charleston Area. The club meets once a month at The Harbour Club in downtown Charleston. Zonta Club of Charleston Awards Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarships

Gina Krause of Summerville, South Carolina, was named the recipient of a 2010 Zonta Club of Charleston Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship. The monetary award will allow Krause to continue her graduate studies.

The Zonta International Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarships, first awarded in 1998, are open to women pursuing an undergraduate degree in business leading to a business management career.  The program is designed to encourage undergraduate women to enter careers and to seek leadership positions in business-related fields.  The Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship looks to the women of today to be the leaders of tomorrow.

Ms. Krause will use her award to purchase course textbooks and tuition at Washington State University to finish her BA in Entrepreneurship. She has plans to start her own business with the knowledge that she gains in college. The club selected Ms. Krause for her passion to educate herself, her willingness to change her life and start a new chapter in her career and her dedication to hard work.

Zonta Announces 2010 Amelia Earhart Fellows

Zonta International awards the Amelia Earhart fellowships to talented women, pursuing advanced studies in the typically male-dominated fields of aerospace-related sciences and engineering, achieve their educational goals. The Fellowship enables these women to invest in state-of-the-art computers to conduct their research, purchase expensive books and resource materials, and participate in specialized studies around the globe. Zonta Announcing 2010 Young Women In Public Affairs Award

Each year, individual Zonta clubs and Zonta International recognize the need for increased participation of women in public affairs at all levels. The progress of women in the last century has dramatically changed the opportunities available to women, yet women’s participation in positions of public influence continues to lag behind. The Young Women in Public Affairs (YWPA) Awards encourage young women to pursue careers in government, public policy and community organizations.

The Zonta Club of Charleston is currently accepting applications for YWPA awards. The award is $500 and deadline is March 15, 2010. The goal of the Zonta International Young Women in Public Affairs Program is to encourage more young women to participate in public and political life by recognizing a commitment to the volunteer sector, evidence of volunteer leadership achievements and a dedication to the advancement of the status of women.

Young women who are pre-university or pre-college students (age 16-20) at the time of application and demonstrate evidence of active commitment to volunteerism; evidence of volunteer leadership achievements and evidence of international awareness are eligible for the monetary award.

YWPA recipients are initially selected at the Zonta club level, and then compete at the district and international levels of Zonta International. Since 1990, Zonta has presented 465 district and international awards totaling US$225,750 to young women from 47 countries. All application materials must be received at the Zonta Club of Charleston by March 15, 2010.
