Stingrays to Host a Special Domestic Awareness Hockey Night on November 6, 2010

The Zonta Club of Charleston is very excited to report that South Carolina Stingrays agreed to host a special night devoted to Domestic Violence Awareness on November 6. Part of the proceeds of that night will go to help victims.

For each ticket ordered online for $15, they will donate $5 to build a Transitional Housing Shelter for domestic violence victims in North Charleston, SC.

2010-2011 Board Announced

The Zonta Club of Charleston announced today its new board for 2010-2011. Vladia Jurcova-Spencer of Stylee PR & Marketing was named president; Kathleen Rodgers of the Charleston Chapter of YWCA was elected vice-president; Diana Bogart of Cruise Planners was named treasurer, Renee Leach Carlos was announced as the new secretary. Zonta board members are:  La-Tanya Fisher, Caraline DiNunzio, Betsy Fraser, Maureen Cody, Patricia Warner and Heidi Perez.

Zonta Announces 2010 Amelia Earhart Fellows

Zonta International awards the Amelia Earhart fellowships to talented women, pursuing advanced studies in the typically male-dominated fields of aerospace-related sciences and engineering, achieve their educational goals. The Fellowship enables these women to invest in state-of-the-art computers to conduct their research, purchase expensive books and resource materials, and participate in specialized studies around the globe. Amelia Earhart Fellows have gone on to become astronauts, aerospace engineers, astronomers, professors, geologists, business owners, heads of companies, even Secretary of the US Air Force.to remarkable women in I am pleased to announce the 2010 Amelia Earhart Fellows.

Congratulations to this year’s exceptional women that were awarded the fellowship for their educational and professional achievements. They join a remarkable group of 902 women from 64 countries around the world who are changing the face of aerospace-related sciences and engineering.

With the assistance of Tim Banks, graphic design professor at the Art Institute of Charleston, our club had the opportunity to work with the Art Institute’s students and pick from several designs presented by them.  This amazing  new poster created by John Gross, a graphic design student of the Art Institute, is the winning design selected by our club members.  We are very grateful to the Art Institute for its support!

Zonta Spring Wine Social, May 13, 2010 at Robert Lange Studios

The Zonta Club of Charleston is devoted to increasing public awareness of the issue of domestic violence. On Thursday, May 13, 2010, the club will host its popular social and networking event, the Zonta Wine Social at Robert Lange Studios located at 2 Queen Street in downtown Charleston. The fundraising event starts at 6pm and attendees will enjoy wine and cheese and works of art by renowned local and national artists. Tickets are $10 per person in advance and $15 at the door.

Internationally, Zonta’s mission is to stop violence, and to improve lives of women through a variety of international service projects. In 2008-2010, Zonta International will fund service programs in Rwanda (Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV), in Guatemala and El Salvador (Safe Cities for Women), in Liberia (Reduction of Obstetric Fistula).

Zonta Announcing 2010 Young Women In Public Affairs Award

Each year, individual Zonta clubs and Zonta International recognize the need for increased participation of women in public affairs at all levels. The progress of women in the last century has dramatically changed the opportunities available to women, yet women’s participation in positions of public influence continues to lag behind. The Young Women in Public Affairs (YWPA) Awards encourage young women to pursue careers in government, public policy and community organizations.

The Zonta Club of Charleston is currently accepting applications for YWPA awards. The award is $500 and deadline is March 15, 2010. The goal of the Zonta International Young Women in Public Affairs Program is to encourage more young women to participate in public and political life by recognizing a commitment to the volunteer sector, evidence of volunteer leadership achievements and a dedication to the advancement of the status of women.

Young women who are pre-university or pre-college students (age 16-20) at the time of application and demonstrate evidence of active commitment to volunteerism; evidence of volunteer leadership achievements and evidence of international awareness are eligible for the monetary award.

YWPA recipients are initially selected at the Zonta club level, and then compete at the district and international levels of Zonta International. Since 1990, Zonta has presented 465 district and international awards totaling US$225,750 to young women from 47 countries. All application materials must be received at the Zonta Club of Charleston by March 15, 2010. Who is eligible?
