Zonta Announcing 2010 Young Women In Public Affairs Award
Each year, individual Zonta clubs and Zonta International recognize the need for increased participation of women in public affairs at all levels. The progress of women in the last century has dramatically changed the opportunities available to women, yet women’s participation in positions of public influence continues to lag behind. The Young Women in Public Affairs (YWPA) Awards encourage young women to pursue careers in government, public policy and community organizations.
The Zonta Club of Charleston is currently accepting applications for YWPA awards. The award is $500 and deadline is March 15, 2010. The goal of the Zonta International Young Women in Public Affairs Program is to encourage more young women to participate in public and political life by recognizing a commitment to the volunteer sector, evidence of volunteer leadership achievements and a dedication to the advancement of the status of women.
Young women who are pre-university or pre-college students (age 16-20) at the time of application and demonstrate evidence of active commitment to volunteerism; evidence of volunteer leadership achievements and evidence of international awareness are eligible for the monetary award.
YWPA recipients are initially selected at the Zonta club level, and then compete at the district and international levels of Zonta International. Since 1990, Zonta has presented 465 district and international awards totaling US$225,750 to young women from 47 countries. All application materials must be received at the Zonta Club of Charleston by March 15, 2010.
